  • Apple - iPod Hi-Fi

    February 28, 2006

Every two weeks Apple has to come out with another announcement of a product to help drive some more revenue. Today’s revelation is iPod Hi-Fi, a small box with a dock for an iPod that promises room filling sound in a 6×6x17″ box.

Steve Jobs and the Apple cronies are positing this device as an audiophile quality device for the home. My friends, as a semi-audiophile who has invested a substantial amount in a home theater equipment, let me assure you that this is ridiculous.

Any audiophile will scoff at the assertion because the MP3 format is inherently of poorer quality than CD’s. MP3’s revolutionized music because if their ability to compress songs into a manageable size to use portably.

That’s great, and the MP3 format has its place — but that place is not in a high quality stereo setup. MP3’s are great for the car or while jogging, but when it comes to serious audiophile listening, well, get serious.

Apple will probably make a gazillion dollars on this thing by duping ignorant people into thinking they can obtain a hi-fi experience in a shoe box. Good for them, but wise up people. I’m sure it will be a cool product, but don’t confuse it with true hi-fi.
