  • 13-year-old N.J. girl wins spelling bee, resigned to life of torment

    June 2, 2006

Katherine Close won the national spelling bee yesterday after she spelled the word “ursprache” correctly. Katherine said she got excited when she heard the word asked of her because she “knew how to spell it as soon as [she] heard it”. Nice job, Katherine. You’ve got a lifetime of “dork” jokes coming your way. Hope it was worth it.

The runner-up in the competition was a 14-year-old Canadian named Finola Mei Hwa Hackett who faltered in the competition when she misspelled “welstschmerz”. Moron. Ironically, “welstchmerz” means a type of mental depression.

Word has it that Hackett dipped into welstchmerz following losing the competition, but then declined into superwelstchmerz when someone told her she’s Canadian. She then leaped out of her 8th story hotel window, plummeting to her ultimate demise.

    “Your next word is ‘corpuscle’.”
“Um, could you use that in a sentence?”
“Hey Fred, look at that ‘corpuscle’.”
