Flickr gets even cooler with mapping…

August 29, 2006

Great new addition from Flickr, everyone.  Now you can put locations on all of your photos to place them on a map and give a visual of where they were taken.  For example, here you can find all the shots I’ve taken in PA.  Or, say you want to see pictures everyone on Flickr has taken in Lincoln Park, Chicago.  Well, just go here.  How about Liberty Island, New York?  The Grand Canyon?  The National Mall in D.C.?  Maybe you want to check out Ibiza, Spain.  How about historic Route 66

As you can see I’m fairly excited about this.  Up until now, there were 3rd party apps that could do this, but it was pretty clunky.  With Flickr making this an official part of the site, it’s much better now.  You can read all about it, and how to do it yourself over at the FlickrBlog.

So go have yourself a Flickr picture tour of somewhere cool!  Just keep in mind that more popular locations will have several pages of photos, so keep your eye in the upper left corner what page you’re on.  Enjoy!

Seen on Irish Eyes message board…

August 29, 2006

fightingirish2005: “What would you do if your wife asked to have intercourse with 3 minutes to go, score tied, in this years USC
game, on the condition its in the bedroom, no TV on or recording of the
remainder of the game, and if you decline the offer, your shut off for
the next 2 weeks? Also, ND is undefeated at the time so the NC BCS game
is in the balance.”

Soonerirish1: “I’d take the sex and still have 2 minutes of game time left.”

Georgia Tech Depth Chart

August 25, 2006

The two-deep for Georgia Tech has been released by Coach Weis.  Some things of note:

- Munir Prince is in behind Walker instead of Aldridge.  I have to think this is temporary until Aldridge’s knee is completely healthy.

- The third and fourth WR’s are Grimes (no surprise) and Anastasio, respectively.

- Sam Young is our new RT.  Looks like he’ll be a beast.

- Olsen is the second string LG.  I’m surprised he beat out Stewart and Carufel.

- John Ryan is our second LDE.  This scares me.

- Talley beat out Frome for RDE.  Hopefully this is a good sign.

- Mitchell Thomas is at SAM with Vernaglia backing him up.  Interesting.

- As expected, Travis Thomas is our WILL.  Mmm…speed.

- Darrin Walls won the second LC spot.  Nice work.

- McCarthy caught up to Bruton for 2nd FS.  This is really surprising to me.  I figured after the special teams performance that Bruton put on last year, he might even challenge Ndukwe for the starting spot.

- Lambert and McNeil tied for 2nd RC, which means another year of Mike Richardson.

- Three different guys will perform the various kicking duties.  Yikes.

- Grimes and West will be the two kick returners.  I’m curious where Prince ended up here.

That’s about it.  8 days, baby!!

Pluto is out, baby

August 24, 2006

After 76 years of being a planet,
Pluto is officially out of club as of today. New “planet rules” developed by poindexters in Prague have ousted Pluto due to its oblong orbit that intersects with Neptune’s. It is now part of a new category of celestial bodies known as “dwarf planets”, so I guess technically it is still a planet of some kind.

Ironically, NASA just sent a spacecraft to explore the newly named dwarf planet. It’s not scheduled to reach Pluto for another 9.5 years, so who knows what Pluto will be by then. Money well spent, I say.

CBS to stream shows online

August 16, 2006

Yet another network is moving to online content distribution, and yet another network misses the mark.  Like NBC and ABC, CBS will now stream their shows online for viewers.  When are the networks going to get it?  Streaming is so passe.  People (i.e., me) want downloadable, take on the go, watch whenever you feel like, high video quality programing.  We would also like it without being encumbered by DRM, and not have to pay more than $0.25 per episode.  I’ll pay to not have to deal with commercials, but I won’t pay $2 an episode.

Until that day comes, uTorrent is your friend.

1 TB drives coming this year

August 15, 2006

Cnet is reporting that soon consumers will be able to purchase 1 TB drives for home use, but that “most consumers won’t need that much storage”.  Are you kidding me?  I’d kill for that.  Don’t they realize that video takes up a lot of space?

Boy George gets trashy

August 14, 2006

Today 80’s icon Boy George reported for trash cleanup duty as part of
his community service project in New York City.  The sentence came as a
result of Boy falsly reporting a robbery at his Manhatten apartment.
When the cops showed up, all they found was a load of coke.  Good
thinking, George.

An hour in to his service, Boy got pissed at the littany of media
surrounding him shouting, “You think you’re better than me?”  After his
stint on trash duty, George is said to have gone out to breakfast with
his hotel doorman and discussed the stock market.

Ahhh….time shifting

August 6, 2006

While the rest of the world is watching Deadwood tonight, I will be too. The only difference is that I will be watching a time-shifted version from 3 weeks ago that I’m trying to catch up on. I’m convinced that Deadwood is the finest show on the air right now, and the fact that I can watch it wherever and whenever I want makes it even better.

Kobayashi sets brat-eating record

August 6, 2006

Kobayashi just doesn’t quit. The 27 year old Japanese super-freak managed to eat 58 brats with no buns in just 10 minutes. For those of you counting, that’s 16,820 calories, 1,450 grams of fat, and 19 days worth of the FDA’s recommended daily allowance of sodium.

How does this guy only weigh a buck sixty?

Which Muppet are you?

August 6, 2006

According to this test, I’m either Miss Piggy, Sam the Eagle, or Statler. I prefer Statler.

You scored as Statler and Waldorf. A two-fer! You are cranky and wisecracking, but everybody loves you anyway. Doe-hoh-hoh-hoh!

Exciting Week

August 6, 2006

This week I’m on the road training at the esteemed University of Virginia. It’s cool to be back here, as I actually looked at going to school here roughly 7 years ago (yikes). Luckily I ended up where I did, because as I just learned, we ranked 5 places higher in U.S. News and World Report’s college rankings (these things are supremely important). That being said, this is a freaking cool place. Notre Dame is gorgeous, but I think UVa has it beat, especially with respect to the area surrounding the campus. I hope to check in regularly this week as I’ll have the time, and keep taking some pictures of the sites and sounds.

Tomorrow after class I have a much anticipated tour of Jefferson’s Monticello. I’ve been wanting to do this for years. Should be a good time.

Sore winners

August 4, 2006

Freaking Desmond Reed, the USC tailback injured in last year’s ND game, is still whining about the grass that he claims tore his ACL to shreds. I find it odd that Reggie Bush didn’t seem to have too much trouble in that game, but then again, Reggie Bush is a very good player and Desmond Reed is a very bad player. It’s funny how grass exacerbates a crappy player’s crappiness.

Golf

August 4, 2006

Now that I’m “in the banking industry”, I’m going to have to be playing a lot more golf. I enjoy golf, but as Winston Churchill once said, it is indeed “the best way to spoil a good walk”. An alternative viewpoint is posited by a rather crack-ridden Robin Williams here:

Funny stuff.

Minority Report

August 3, 2006

Despite her status as a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, my wife is still considered a minority, at least by one measure. How unfortunate for yours truly.
