Sports Guy Gem

November 30, 2007

I just had to link to this column from the Sports Guy.  I don’t think he’s as funny as he used to be, but this made me laugh out loud.  He writes a letter to himself in 1982, and then gives his NFL picks for the week.  Best line:

“Speaking of old people, some buddies and I had a great argument last
night: Who’s the oldest celebrity you’d be excited to have sex with?
The consensus? Sophia Loren. She’s like 77. I voted for her as well,
but only after confirming that Mona from “Who’s the Boss?” wasn’t alive
anymore.”

Classic.

Health

November 15, 2007

Lately I’ve been trying to eat healthier.  In an effort to get my vitamins and minerals, I’ve taken to swallowing a multivitamin supplement each morning and drinking a warm glass of Ovaltine before bed each night.  I’m such an old woman.

“Why do they call it Ovaltine?  The cup is round.  The jar is round.  They should call it Roundtine.”

Quick Football Note

November 8, 2007

I haven’t talked much about football this year, because there hasn’t been much good to say.  Just a quick update though: in case you haven’t heard, Jimmy Clausen will be starting this weekend vs. Air Force.  Let’s hope Charlie lets him throw a pass longer longer than 7 yards that isn’t an out to the sidelines.

Robert F. Thomson, II is an embarassment to the University of Notre Dame

November 7, 2007

This is hot off the ND message boards as of a few minutes ago.  Some idiot Alumni Board Director by the name of Rob Thomson evidently wrote a scathing letter to Charlie Weis and, thinking he was cool, emailed it to his friends.  Now it’s hitting the boards and ND people (including me) are pissed.

Mr. Thomson is listed as a director of the Orlando Alumni Club here. So if you are so inclined, you can email him at [edited due to threat of legal action] or call him at [edited due to threat of legal action] to tell him what an embarrassment he is to Notre Dame.  I’ve decided not to post the letter because it won’t do anything good for our program.  Suffice to say, it’s a piece of poo.

Latest Movie Rental: Black Book

November 7, 2007
http://thecia.com.au/reviews/b/images/black-book-zwartboek-poster-1.jpg

Of many films made about World War II over the past 15 years or so, there are a few that have stood out above the rest.  The first is Schindler’s List, which is probably one of the most gut-wrenching movies I’ve ever seen.  Couple that with the technical details of how the film was shot and written, and you can understand why it garnered so much praise when released.  The next is The Pianist.  For some reason, that film struck a chord with me.  It gave a different perspective on the war, and showed in detail the transformation of daily life from before the Polish occupation to the height of Nazi power in Europe.  Finally, Band of Brothers is in my opinion the finest film about WWII ever made.  Now, I know it was an HBO miniseries, but that format allowed such deep character development that you actually felt like you were part of the group by the end.  I’m a firm believer that every American should see it to have an appreciation for the sacrifices others have made to ensure our freedoms in this country.

Ok, let’s get off my soapbox.

Black Book looks at the war from a perspective I hadn’t see before.  It examines the latter days of the war in early 1945, and details the Dutch Resistance movement against Nazi occupation through the liberation of the country.  It’s a film that’s not as disturbing or “in your face” as the previous three I mentioned, but I still fee that it’s definitely worth seeing.  It’s always interesting to see a European production of the goings on of the war.  The entire film is shot in Dutch, but as with many other fine foreign films, you shouldn’t let that scare you away.Check it out!
